Engagement lead - Program Manager Senior - Freelance

Role: Engagement Lead 

Context

This role sits within a multi-engagement delivery program that runs several parallel workstreams (data/platform integration engagements) for a large multinational client, each following a structured lifecycle from initial assessment through build and handover. The Engagement Lead is one of five core, standing roles in the delivery team.

Purpose

Own end-to-end delivery accountability for one or more concurrent client engagements — timeline, scope, commercial boundaries, risk, and stakeholder relationships — while coordinating (not performing) the technical work done by data architects, platform engineers, and data quality specialists.

Core Responsibilities

• Delivery ownership: timeline, scope adherence, and overall engagement health across the full lifecycle (kickoff → assessment → build → handover/transfer)

• Governance & gate management: prepares and owns "gate evidence" packs for formal stage reviews; runs the risk/issue log (RAID) and escalation flow

• Stakeholder management: primary point of contact with senior client data leadership and business sponsors — needs genuine executive presence, not just reporting skills

• Commercial oversight: scope boundaries, change flagging, and avoiding uncontrolled scope creep

• Capacity & portfolio management: since this person typically runs 2–3 engagements in parallel, they flag capacity constraints proactively before picking up new work

• Cross-functional coordination: aligns the core delivery team (design/architecture lead, platform engineer, data quality engineer) without being the technical decision-maker themselves

• Continuity: expected to stay with an engagement from day one through formal close-out; a backup shadow is typically identified a few months in, but the Lead carries primary accountability throughout

Ideal Candidate Profile

• 5+ years in data, integration, or technology delivery leadership (not pure PM — needs to be credible on data/platform programs without needing to be hands-on technical)

• Strong, proven stakeholder management at senior/executive level — comfortable being "in the room" with client data leadership from day one

• Track record running structured governance rhythms (stage gates, steering committees, RAID logs) rather than informal project tracking

• Comfortable holding accountability across multiple concurrent engagements with staggered priorities

• Business-facing communicator — able to translate technical risk/status into language a business sponsor acts on

• Calm under pressure; capacity to make judgment calls on escalation and de-scoping decisions

What this role is not

• Not a hands-on technical architect or engineer — that's a separate, dedicated role on the team

• Not a junior PM/coordinator role — this is a senior, trust-bearing position with direct executive exposure

Working Model

• Involvement is consistent but part-time across the full lifecycle of each engagement (heavier at kickoff/assessment, lighter but present through build and transfer)

• Typically covers 2–3 engagements simultaneously in a "portfolio" style, rather than one engagement at a time

• Aligned to a regional hub (the program runs parallel regional teams), with occasional need for in-person presence
